Darcy Temptation A Sequel to Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice Regina Jeffers Books

I loved this book, even a second time. I had previously read it when it was Darcy’s Dreams [I wasn’t writing reviews then].

The story picks up where Darcy’s Passions ended. Jeffers did a great job melding/blending the two books. I think it could possibly read as a stand-a-lone. It’s hard for me to decide since I’ve read both. It was so creative how bits and pieces of information from Passions were smoothly woven into the fabric of Temptations for those who might not remember what happened or possible have not read the other book. This book could easily be divided into sections or stories that run parallel to each other. I am so glad Jeffers did not break it up into novellas as so many of the new writers are attempting.

First, we have the relationship of Darcy and Elizabeth. They are newly married and learning how to live with and understand each other. From the beginning, their road to happiness and harmony has not always a smooth transition. When you have two such passionate and headstrong personalities, sparks are bound to fly and fly they do. Forces were always trying to come between them or circumvent their happiness. I liked how they worked together and made Pemberley strong based on that relationship. It was harmonious and a good solid marriage…until….

Next, we have Georgiana growing up and assuming her role in society as she prepared for her presentation and coming out. In the previous book, she was introduced to Chadwick Harrison and the seeds of affection were sown. In this story she is introduced to Captain Rutherford. We now have two men who were vying for her attention and affection. The action regarding these two men had me unable to put my book down. It was edge of the seat drama that had my heart racing and I could not figure out what was going to happen. The political atmosphere of the time was smoothly worked into the story-line along with the dangers and threats of opposing factions. It interfered with Georgiana’s desires and feelings for one of the men and eventually put her life in danger.

Darcy was attempting to establish connections and an advantageous match for Georgiana while in London, whether she was agreeable to not. However, his actions [totally innocent] threatened his marriage and the reputation of his wife, who, by the way, had been left at home so she wouldn’t embarrass him. All this was unknown to him or Georgiana until the rumors and gossip reached their notice and that of their friends and family. Oh how the mighty have fallen. He would reap the harvest of that mistake for a long time. Damage Control!!!

And then Kitty, she stayed with the Darcy’s after the Festive Season we enjoyed in Passions. She was to help with Elizabeth’s laying in and she soon learned how to live a very different lifestyle. Darcy took a hand in arranging for her to experience additional training and guidance in her education with a cadre of masters. Plus, she began to see that life beyond Lydia’s influence and example was very different and she vowed to change her outcome from that of Lydia’s. Her evolution was amazing and touching in her endeavors to find love and be worthy of being loved.

Let’s not forget Wickham and Lydia. In Passions, prior to her marriage to Darcy, Elizabeth had a very interesting heart-to-heart conversation with her younger sister. That conversation came into play when they showed up [unannounced, uninvited and unwanted] at Pemberley while Darcy was away. Lydia was Lydia in all her loud, vulgar, self-centered attitude as she attempted to order Kitty about. Kitty was horrified and embarrassed by her sister’s outrageous behavior. Elizabeth then did exactly what she promised Lydia she would do if Wickham ever showed up at Pemberley. Oh sweet revenge. I simply loved that scene.

In another section of the book, we go dark as Darcy experienced amnesia after an attempt on his life. He could not remember anything regarding the last several years. He could only remember back to when Georgiana was 12 years old. He didn’t remember Bingley, Netherfield, or Elizabeth. His attitude and persona was as he was back in those days before…and that frightened Georgiana more than anything as she remembered the dark days of Darcy. We see his struggle as he tried to understanding his marriage to Elizabeth. His haughty looks of disdain and confusion as he attempted to reconcile his father’s wishes and desires for him with what he had somehow done with his life…married so very far beneath his social circle. It was inconceivable to him and he wondered how it came about? He was horrified at Elizabeth’s actions and attitude, shocked at her behavior and demeanor, and scandalized at her bedroom prowess. His haughty attitude and disdain pushed Elizabeth to the limits of endurance. This was hard to read and I worried whether they would ever be able to work their way back to each other and to that ultimate HEA.

Lady Catherine was beyond the pale, which she usually is in JAFF books. Oh what a mess. Lady C. was brilliantly evil in her attempts to circumvent Elizabeth’s authority and place at Pemberley. She really put her foot in it…and on one occasion, in a very public way. She was outrageous and I just want to say…Yeah for Lord Matlock.

There were several villains introduced that created extreme situations for our dear couple. The male villain could give Wickham lessons in evil machinations while the female villainess left Caroline behind in her dust in her attempts to secure Darcy. They lead the tension and drama for our story and it was so amazing how Jeffers pulled off their outcome. Oh my goodness, how creative. The ton will never be the same.

There were errors; you can’t catch them all. One glitch in particular was, and I couldn’t decide if it was related to my Kindle Edition, the lack of a space after a period, or the period would word-wrap to the next line. However, when the action became intense…I simply forgot all about errors as I was caught up in the drama. So, you will have to decide for yourself.

Some reviews were super critical regarding the love language between ODC. Well…I wonder what your bedroom/pillow talk would sound like on the written page? However, I will concede one point, I didn’t think it was as romantic as it could have been, especially when ODC had the universe of prose and poetry available to them. Even the Bible has some heated words in the Song of Solomon. So, they are without excuse.

Darcy Temptation A Sequel to Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice Regina Jeffers Books Reviews

I have read many many many sequels of Pride and Prejudice, this one has a bit a twist on it. After only four months of marital Bliss, Darcy and Elizabeth find themselves separated, Darcy, after rushing off to investigate a matter concerning Georgiana, Darcy finds himself under attack and injured, with no memory of his life. He is tricked into believing he is someone else entirely, and even when that is set right, he finds that he has to fall in love with his wife all over again. Can he get over his pride and dare I say prejudice against Elizabeths social status and connections and fall in love with his wife and soon to be mother of his child?

I think we all know the answer is yes, however the journey that Miss Regina Jeffers offers is both unique and enticing. I found myself staying up to read on even when I was more than ready to go to sleep. That being said there are some things about this period book, and sequal to my beloved Pride and Prejudice that bothered me. The references to coffee for instance seemed out of place. Especially when you read her Christmas book, set in the same time period and Coffee was a "American" thing newly coming to England and not really welcomed. It was a nice follow up to her Book Darcy's Passions and stayed within her and Jane Austens story line as well. Something that Ms. Jeffers does not do with her other books. She does use the same phrases over, and over and over again, which can be just a tad annoying, as well as referencing back not only to Darcy's Passion, but to Pride and Prejudice, which I felt was unnecessary as well. Even though I believe that ten dollars for this book was a tad high, if you are looking for a fun easy period read that will keep your interest I suggest that you pick these up. I definitely do not regret my purchase and I do believe I will read it again.
shows that I bought this book on May 22, 2009 and that the publication date is September 15, 2009 so I am befuddled. I have the paperback of 515 pages. I read this long ago and only now re-read it in its entirety due to wanting to post a review and to have it fresh in my mind. In doing so I placed this book beside my bed and determined to read a few pages or a chapter each night, thinking that since I had read it once before the need to read to the end would not be as urgent. Boy, was I wrong! A little more than ¼ of the way in dire happenings began to threaten ODC’s wedded bliss.

Darcy and Elizabeth are married about 3 months and as both Kitty and Georgiana reside in their household, are aware of men who both show them attention and who also seem to stir the interest of their sisters in return. Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s passionate love spills over into their daily life and sets the example of what both sisters now seek for themselves. And Elizabeth’s pregnancy seems to be the icing on the cake. How can their marriage become any more perfect?

While Kitty’s attention is drawn by a Mr. Clayton Ashford, a man who has received a living from the Darcy family, she has become aware of the deficiencies in her character after the debacle with her sister, Lydia, and Wickham. She fears Mr. Ashford will reject her if he becomes aware of her family’s history or even of how she also was considered a silly flirt previously. Can she redeem her character and will Mr. Ashford forgive her past or will it taint his position as a vicar?

Meanwhile a Chadwick Harrison has approached his friend, Darcy, for advice as he seeks to manage his neglected estate. But he also has a reputation as an Abolitionist. This reputation causes another of Darcy’s acquaintances to “warn” Georgiana about any friendship with Mr. Harrison. It is this warning that now brings great angst into our story, and which does not abate for many pages.

Mr. Harrison learns of Captain Rutherford’s warning and goes to Darcy stating that he will withdraw any interest in Georgiana due to the fact that this may bring a danger to Georgiana. Darcy (and Elizabeth) do not want to allow one man’s warning to dictate their actions. So Darcy seeks answers from an older woman who knows this man but who, due to her age, cannot travel well. In going to meet with her his carriage is attacked, the postilion and the coachman killed, while Darcy is assaulted, strikes his head on a rock and is rendered unconscious.

Ironically he is rescued by a lady named “Elizabeth” and when he awakens with amnesia she uses the situation to her advantage. Meanwhile, back at the estate no one hears from Darcy but Elizabeth experiences a sharp pain and is sure something has happened. When they do not hear from him, she sends out a search party and the carriage is found with the two dead bodies but a search for miles around does not turn up any news of Darcy.

The author weaves a web of suspense and intrigue worthy of any detective novel. At this point I could not put the novel down. I skipped lunch and stayed in my p.j.’s, thankfully having no appointments or business to attend to today. The angst for Elizabeth is excruciating and it does not ease up. No, it becomes worse after he is found.

As the blurb on the back cover states “Elizabeth and Darcy must discover their love for each other all over again”. But while her affections for the Darcy she married remain true, can she love this man? And while he dreams of a passionate coming together with “someone” is this just a fantasy or memories?

Set during the Abolitionist Movement in England and with the romances of Kitty, Georgiana and Anne as secondary stories there is much to interest JAFF readers in this tale. It is not smooth sailing for anyone. From Lady Catherine to Elizabeth Donnelly to Cecilia McFarland to Captain Rutherford, forces attempt to tear not only our dear couple apart but to prevent happiness in marriage for others in the family. Even Lydia and Wickham show up and test Elizabeth’s position as “mistress of Pemberley”.

I have to mention that I thoroughly enjoyed reading of the flirting, the touches, the caresses, the tender passion described between Lizzy and Darcy. It does not trip over into any vivid descriptions of bedroom scenes but allows us to feel the depth of their love and commitment. This was well worth the day’s attention I gave to this book.
